Technical coatings to be used with a variety of fibre types and fabric constructions, incorporating Flammtex®, flame retardant water based coatings

Flammtex®: Products are designed to meet varying fire retardancy standards.

The coatings are water resistant and durable, imparting good handle and dimensional stability to the fabric in addition to flame retardancy.
The Flammtex® range can be applied by knife coating, padding, spraying, paste, foaming, lick coating or rotary screen printing.

Flammtex® compounds can be typically used in the following industries and applications:

• Automotive/Transport > seats, headliners, door board fabrics
• Home Furnishings > upholstery, curtains and blinds, bedding
• Medical > curtains, bedding
• Geotextiles > landscape stabilization meshes, scrims
• Sport & Leisure > tarpaulin, canopies, tents

FAQ&A

Q: How has VLP adapted its flame retardant product range to be in line with
the latest EU directive?

A:
VLP is very aware of the EU Directive 2003/11/CE due to our involvement in the supply of flame retardant latex compounds.
We have assured ourselves that the Brominated Hydrocarbon flame retardants that we formulate into our latex compounds do not themselves contain more than 0.1% of Penta and OctaBromoDiPheny Ether as impurities, and thus can assure all our customers that all the products that VLP supply will comply with Directive 2003/11/CE. Other suppliers of FR compounds using raw materials from less reputable sources may not be able to make the same clear statement as VLP can!

Q: Do you produce a flame retardant finishing for domestic fabrics which keeps its potency after 5 washes?

A: The majority of the FR treatments for curtains are simple phosphate salt solutions which redisolve when the fabric is made wet, and cannot therefore be made wash resistant. The only phosphate FR system that is suitable for use on cotton fabrics is the 'Pyrovatex' type product, which is durable to multiple laundering, but does have a detrimental effect on the tear strength of the treated fabric. 'Pyrovatex' is not suitable for Cotton/PES blend fabrics.

Vita Liquid Polymers products are in fact coatings that can be applied to the back of the fabric. Our products are supplied in liquid form at a viscosity suited to the piece of coating equipment that the coating compound is to be applied with.

Curtain fabrics are best coated using a 'Crushed Acrylic Foam compound' to which a layer of ground viscose flock has been applied whilst the coating on the fabric is still wet. It is a slightly complicated application and processing method which requires that you to foam the compound through a mechanical foaming unit, before coating the foamed compound onto the textile substrate with a knife over roller coating head, situated in front of a stentor drying oven equipped with an electrostatic flocking station also in front of the drying oven. At the stentor oven exit, the stable foam coating compound is crushed flat between rollers. The coated fabric is then passed down the stentor again to fully cure and cross link the compound, so that it develops its full wash and dry clean resistance. Curtain fabrics treated in this way can withstand repeated laundering, and the FR additives incorporated into the coating compound remain in the coating after laundering and maintain the FR performance of the coated fabric.

Fabrics treated in this way give the 'thermal lined' appearance. Application of three coats (first coloured white, second coloured black, third coloured white) give a 'blackout' appearance.
